CATLIN, Irene Helen

With sadness, we announce the passing of Irene Helen Catlin at the age of 97 on December 16, 2011 at Heron Grove in Vernon. She is survived by her loving husband Harold, sons Ted (Sheila) and Bob (Sharon) and five grandchildren, Jennifer, Steven, Jill, Julie, David, Nicole and Lisa. Irene is also survived by her nine great-grandchildren, Maggie, Libby, Olivia, Ivy, Rosemary, Spencer, Khrystian, Lucas and Jesse. Irene was born on April 14, 1914 at Winnipeg, Manitoba to William and Elizabeth Sudds. She and Harold were married on July 30, 1938. During their 73 years of marriage, they resided in Winnipeg, Portage La Prairie, Dawson Creek, Kamloops, Abbotsford, Penticton, Sechelt, Powell River, Trail, and Christina Lake before moving to Vernon in 1985. Irene began her teaching career at Abbotsford in 1949, teaching at several elementary schools. During this time she attended summer schools in Victoria and was awarded her Elementary School Teaching Certificate (First Class) in 1952 and continued teaching at Abbotsford until she and Harold moved to Penticton in 1955. Irene taught at several schools at Penticton and became Principal of O’Connell Elementary School in 1962. Irene lived an active life during her younger and middle-aged years, enjoying camping, fishing, snow shoeing and rock hounding. She also enjoyed less active hobbies, including painting, needlepoint and pottery. Irene loved the Lord Jesus and her Bible, and led women’s Bible studies for several years through Emmanuel Fellowship Baptist Church. Irene will be remembered by her family, friends and care-givers as a happy, loving, bright and smiling wife, mom, and grandma. We will all miss her very much but we know that she is now at rest with her Lord.

Special thanks to the Heron Grove staff for the wonderful care they gave Irene during the past 4 years.

Funeral service will be held at Pleasant Valley Funeral Chapel on Dec. 30, 2011 at 1:00 pm with Pastor David Fairbrother presiding. A reception will be held at the Pleasant Valley Funeral facility following a graveside ceremony at Vernon Cemetery.
