Irma Franzke

Irma Franzke

We regret to announce the passing of Irma Franzke at her home in Ashton Creek on Wednesday, October 12, 2016. Irma’s last wish was to remain at home till her final day when she would be called home to be with the Lord.

Irma was born on January 15th, 1926 in Germany. The years of her early childhood were hard as she worked on the family farm until the war. After the war she worked in restaurants and even sold chocolate in the streets to survive and save so she could immigrate to Canada.

After coming to Canada in the 1950s, she worked as a cook and eventually owned her own restaurant in a busy business district in Vancouver. She sold her restaurant to move to Enderby B.C. and semi retired in the late 70s. Irma still worked at the camps in the oil industry in B.C and Alberta as a cook. She really enjoyed this as it got her out amongst people and she could choose the months that she wanted to work.

Irma thought she had found heaven on earth when she moved to her place in Ashton Creek. She loved gardening and animals. Irma raised chickens for the fresh eggs and had many cats and dogs over the years. Her favorite dog Pikushe, passed away two years ago and was buried on her property. Irma’s love for this dog was so great that she continued to place stones on Pikushe’s grave until her passing.

Irma’s strength and independence was well known. She continued to drive until she was in her 80s. She had come to the realization that her eyesight was failing her and it was not safe for her to drive. It was difficult for her to ask anyone for help, but did accept help from a few close friends. Her closest friend Ida and her son Harvey, whom she had known for many years, would come out to help regularly. They would make a day of it and go for lunch at the Chinese restaurant, and then go shopping and visit. Many neighbors would help her out as well.

There was a graveside service at Cliffside Cemetery on Monday, November 14th 2016 at 11:00 am.

In lieu of flower please send donations to the local SPCA in the memory of Irma Franzke.
