James C. Johnston Ph.D. - Jim passed away with his family by his side on June 30, 2018 in Vernon, B.C. He was predeceased by his daughter, Patricia, and will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 60 years, Thelma, and his three children, Lisa (Kevin), Julie (Howard), Jim (Laura) and six grandchildren, Aaron, Ryan, Brennan, Cameron, Annabelle and James.

Jim was born in Vancouver and graduated with a B.Sc. from the University of British Columbia. He earned his M.Sc. and Ph.D. from Oregon State University where he worked in a U.S. Dept. of Agriculture laboratory and was a published peer-reviewed journal author. Jim and Thelma returned to Canada with their children in 1974 when Jim accepted a faculty position at Okanagan College. Jim taught at both Vernon and Kelowna campuses where he became known as a dedicated and conscientious instructor. Jim enjoyed working with the friendly staff at Okanagan College in Vernon and always looked forward to meeting former students. After nearly 20 years of teaching, Jim retired from his position as College Professor in the Dept. of Biology in 1993.

In the community, Jim served on the boards of the 6th Vernon United Boy Scout Troop, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the People in Need (Crisis Line) and served as a Trustee at Noric House. During retirement, Jim and Thelma enjoyed travelling and playing golf until their late eighties.

Jim was a true gentleman who cared deeply for his family and friends. He was liked by all who met him and adored by those that knew him well. He will be genuinely missed by his many friends and former colleagues. The family would like to thank Dr. Chris Cunningham for his great care of Jim.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held for Jim on Thursday, July 5 at 1:30 pm at Trinity United Church.
