James Gourlay


Passed away at Vernon on March 22, 2006 at the age of 84 years.

Lovingly remembered by beloved wife, Mary, of 46 years; daughters Anne (Andre) Gourlay-Langlois, Ottawa, Janet Gourlay Vallance, Elizabeth Gourlay, Calgary, Margaret Gourlay and partner Ariel Troster, Ottawa; sons James Gourlay, Louisiana, David (Leslie) Gourlay, Toronto; ten grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Predeceased by parents; sole sibling, Mary Jane; and first wife, Lillian Marie.

Born and raised in southern Ontario, he joined the Bank of Commerce after high school and in 1942 joined the RCMP, serving in the Eastern Arctic for three years. He joined the RCAF in 1952 as a Survival Training Instructor. He then transferred to the Security Branch of the Armed Forces and retired in 1971 with the rank of Major. He was National Loss Prevention Manager for both Eaton’s and Birks before finally retiring in 1987.

A Knight of Columbus, his community activities included participation in the Boy Scouts, Big Brothers, United Way and the Canadian Cancer Society.

Prayers will be held at Our Lady of the Valley Church, Coldstream, BC at 6 pm on Monday, 27th March, the Funeral Mass at the same location at 10 am Tuesday, 28th March. Father Martin Peyton Celebrant. Interment will be at the Coldstream Cemetery, with a reception at the Church Narthex to follow.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Variety Club (The Children’s Charity) or the Canadian Cancer Society. Sincere appreciation is given to medical personnel, in particular Drs Raupach and Naude, for the care provided to Jim in recent years.
