James Hackman

James Hackman

Jim, born in Ispas, Alberta on October 18th, 1916, passed away peacefully at Vernon Jubilee Hospital on July 23rd, 2009 with his loving family by his side. He was 92 years of age.

Jim moved to the Okanagan Valley with his family in 1922 and first resided in the Grinrod area north of Vernon and later moved to Swan Lake in 1926. He attended Vernon area schools until the 8th grade at which time he worked at various jobs helping to support his family. In 1937, he married Mary, who was his wife for 71 years.

In 1940, Jim rented his first orchard and then purchased his own which later accumulated upwards of 40 acres. In 1949, he along with his partners built and operated the Vernon Drive-In Theatre until 1955. Jim then concentrated his efforts in construction and built many homes and commercial buildings until his retirement in 1975.

Traveling to many different countries, camping, fishing the many local lakes, playing card games, tending to the fruits and vegetables he grew so well and sitting around telling stories about this area were the things he loved to do. However, his most cherished gift was his immediate family.

Jim is survived by his two sons, Doug (Heather) and Larry (Jayne) both of Coldstream, five grandchildren: Chad, Chelsea (Keith) Balcaen of Coldstream, Jaymie and Rebecca of Vernon, Brenda (Adrian) Eastwood of Victoria; five great grandchildren: James and Jodi Hackman of Edmonton, Emily and Gracie Balcaen of Coldstream and Lara Eastwood of Victoria; one sister, Jenny Sherney of Vernon, and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his wife Mary in 2009, baby boy Hackman in 1949, grandson James in 1996, daughter Dorothy in 2008, sister Mary, and three brothers: Bill, George and Steve.
