Joan Ashton

We regret to announce that passing of Miss Joan Ashton at Heron Grove Good Samaritan Home. Joan was born in Liverpool, England and was orphaned at age 9. In her lifetime she had various jobs. She worked as a maid, and during the war, in an armament factory. After moving to Canada she was employed for many years in the Indian Residential School system as a child care worker. This she enjoyed very much, as it took her to various places from Sask. to B.C.; also the Yukon, Whitehorse and the Artic Circle. Upon her retirement she moved to Vernon and had lived here ever since, with Heron Gove as her final home.

Joan was a feisty lady, and inspite of the limitations of her body, her mind was sharp to the end. She was a faithful member of Faith Baptist Church, and in earlier years known for the poems she read on special occasions.

She leaves behind a sister Muriel, two nieces June and Pamela, a great-nephew and great-neice, all in England; and a nephew Brian (Clara) Hugo of Masset, B.C. She was predeceased by two sisters, Helen and Margaret.

A memorial service was held March 2, 2009 at Faith Baptist Church, 3908-27 Street. Pleasant Valley Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. A special word of appreciation and thanks is extended to Sandy Blanchette who helped Joan out in countless ways. Many thanks also to Heron Grove for their care.
