JOAN BARON

Joan Louise Baron

September 1921 – October 2014

Joan passed away in her sleep following complications from a stroke. Joan was born in Armstrong, and enjoyed growing up and living her 93 years of life in Vernon. This is where she was schooled, later employed for many years at the Vernon Drug Store, married Barrie (Otto), her husband of 69 years and together raised their two daughters and created a large circle of treasured friends and extended family.

While dating, she and Barry spent time at Mable Lake, later purchasing property and spending summers there and wintering in Yuma (where they saw more of their friends from Vernon than they did when in Vernon). Memorable times were had camping, fishing and berry picking throughout the north Okanagan and Kootenay regions, often they were joined by R V-ing friends and family.

Joan was from an era when the family unit was inclusive, post war money was tight and creativity was the name of the game.

A wonderful mother, Joan supported her daughters in figure skating; she spent years sewing costumes with sequins, creating knitted cardigans, mitts and caps, and re-working coats, all with a designer’s flair. Self- taught, she turned out intricate crocheting and basket weaving projects. Garden harvests were carefully nurtured, collected and preserved, recipes shared, and all this accomplished while working a 60 hour work week.

In 2007 Mom and Dad moved into Carrington Place, where they enjoyed feeling secure, respected and well cared for by the professional staff; often wondering why they hadn’t made their move sooner. It was a most comfortable and happy time, due to both the friendships they made there and to the staff, who provided a sense of ‘home’.

Dawn Gillies of Needle Masters offered many appreciated courtesies for both Mom and Dad.

A very special, heartfelt ‘thank you’ is extended to Dr. Picken, who provided the most compassionate medical care and exceptional kindnesses. Dr. Picken was consistently supportive and pulled many ‘rabbits from the hat’ providing Mom, in her final years, with remarkable companionship and quality of life.

Joan was predeceased by parents Ernest and Mercy Shute of Larkin, husband of 69 years, Barry (Otto), daughter Shellay Braam, grandson Jeff Murray, and son – in – law Jack Harms.

She is loved and missed by her daughter Cia Harms, sons – in – law Rand Barker and Henry Braam, grandchildren Marney (Darcy) Wurban, Rob (Nicole) Murray, daughter – in – law Treena Murray and six great – grandchildren.
