In loving memory ~
We are heartbroken to share that we lost our precious daughter, sister, mother and wife Joanne Iris (née McLeod) (Dash) Ponton on Thursday morning, the 26th of January, 2023 at the age of 71.
She passed away after a short fight with ovarian cancer, with her daughters and granddaughter at her side. With sadness in our hearts, we find peace in knowing she is in a better place, her faith sustaining her throughout her ordeal. She was beautiful in every way and there are few words to describe our sadness; the sorrow we feel losing our precious Mom and closest friend much too soon is immeasurable.
Born on November 25th, 1951 to Gordon and Stella (née Barsky) McLeod in Saskatoon, Joanne grew up in Saskatoon, before living in Regina and Dalmeny, Saskatchewan. She loved her first car, a new sage green metallic 1969 Mercury Cougar, purchased with a loan cosigned by her dad. She also spent two years abroad in New Zealand before later becoming a resident of Vernon in 1990. She worked at Vernon & District Credit Union (Vantage One) for 25 years before her retirement in 2017.
Joanne loved the warmth of the Okanagan summers, enjoying many days with picnic lunches at Kin Beach, and coffee in the ducky park (Polson Park), where her daughters and grandchildren share countless memories. She most loved to be at home, enjoying quiet pastimes like sewing, vintage patterns, reading, and writing loving cards or letters to family and friends. She loved her kitties and their company and spending time outside tending her wide variety of plants and flowers.
Joanne was a gentle, patient soul, with her kind and caring nature extending to all those fortunate to have known her. Thoughtful and generous, she expressed her love in many ways, including innumerable small and thoughtful gestures to family and friends, who are forever blessed by her endless care and love.
Joanne will be lovingly remembered by husband Grant Ponton, daughters Tammy Dash (Shaun Shaver) and Shauna (Iain) Hotte; grandchildren Megan (William Garden), Nathan and Bethany Abbott, Clara, Ben, Clem and Miriam Hotte; mother Stella McLeod, sister Darlene, brother Jim (Priscilla) McLeod and sister-in-law Marleen Klassen; stepdaughters Shera Kelly (Michael Averill) and Meagan Ponton (Nat Minifie) step-grandchildren Madison and Emilia Minifie. Joanne was predeceased by her sister Patricia McLeod and her father Gordon McLeod.
We wish to thank the staff at Hospice House for the compassionate care and support they provided both us and our Mom. According to Joanne's wishes, there will be no service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in her name to the Okanagan Humane Society and/or North Okanagan Hospice House.
Grief, like love, is limitless and exists in the present tense. It does not end with death but remains with us and is a sign that we loved and were loved greatly.
"Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." Isaiah 41:10
