JOE PEETERS

Joe Peeters of Vernon, B.C. passed away peacefully March 22, 2004 at the age of 89 at Polson North Extended Care facility after a long courageous fight with cancer. He is survived by sons Melvin (Janet) of St. Albert, Alta., Larry (Donna) of Kamloops, B.C., daughter Sherry (Ron) Mann of Burnaby, B.C., eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren, three sisters Marion Cooke of Enderby, B.C., Alma Specht of Vernon, B.C., and Gladys (Ernie) Nelson of Quesnel, B.C. His loving wife and companion Noel, his father Emiel, his mother Louise, stepfather Tony Pitton and one brother Albert predeceased him. Joe was born on October 1, 1914 in Enderby, B.C. He lost his dad in WWI when he was only an infant. He became an engineer through correspondence courses that he studied at night by a coal oil lamp in a woodshed that he built. He was employed by BC Hydro for 40 years. He grew up loving the outdoors, believing in God and working hard. Fishing, curling, golfing, lawn bowling, and taking long walks were activities he thoroughly enjoyed for many years. After retirement, he participated on many walk-a-thons. His favorite times were spent with his children and grandchildren fishing, camping, swimming, and even water skiing at the age of 70 years old. Joe was a loyal and unselfish friend who gave freely of his time, money and energy to help others, volunteering from boy scouts to kitchen duties at Schubert Centre. Through the Knights of Columbus, he was instrumental in the organizing, fund raising for and building Gateby and Schubert Centre. He sponsored three priests in Equador, gave to Mother Theresa, and never went past a Salvation Army person without pulling out some change. Above all, Joe was a devoted family man and doting father. He never failed to express his love and pride of his family. You fought hard Dad, now it’s time to rest. We love you so much and will miss you dearly. You will always be in our hearts. Prayers will be recited in the Chapel of Vernon Funeral Home at 3:00 PM Thursday March 25, 2004.
