With heavy hearts and great sadness we announce the passing of John Barclay Hocken on September 11, 2021.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years Carol, son Robert (Trish) , daughter and son-in-law Jacqueline and Mark Holland, 5 grandchildren; Taylor, Brooklynn, and Carlie Hocken, Benjamin and Kamryn Holland, sisters Sharon (Ed) Allman and Cindy Nord. Also his much loved in-laws, Randy, Rhonda, Keith, Kim, La Verne, Pat, Georgie, Rose and Janice, many nieces, nephews, great nieces & nephews, and many cousins who he loved dearly.
Predeceased by his parents Barclay and Francis Hocken, brother Ken, sister-in-law Louise, brother-in-laws Alex, William, Ed, Vic and Al.
Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba John attended school there and enjoyed spending every summer at Gull Lake with is family and became a great swimmer. After he finished his schooling he went to work for the CPR and got married in 1964.
In 1965 his son Robert was born and they moved to Powell River, BC and he worked at the mill there. He loved fishing with his friends and was involved with the Powell River Regals hockey team. His daughter Jacqueline was born in Powell River in 1969.
In 1973 the family moved to Coquitlam, BC and he worked for MacMillan Bloedel as a lumber broker. He was also involved in minor hockey there too.
In 1981 the family moved to Vernon, BC where he started up J.B. Hocken Lumber Exports until his retirement in 2004. He enjoyed his retirement golfing with his buddies, travelling and hockey games. He loved family gatherings and telling stories of the good old days. He was a rock in our lives and will be sorely missed.
A family gathering will be held at a later date. Our thanks to the doctors and nurses on Level 7 at Vernon Jubilee Hospital for the wonderful care and to Dr. T. Gilhooly who was John's doctor for many years.
