We regret to announce the death on February 26, 2010 of John Corner at the age of 90 years.

John was predeceased by his wife of 67 years Dodie Corner and is survived by his two daughters Marion (Larry) Fischer of Coldstream and Cindy Corner of Vernon; one son, Gary Corner (Colleen) of Coldstream; four grandchildren; Scott, Ryan, Carmen (Tim) and Shannon (Bert).

John had been a resident of the Okanagan Landing and Vernon area for 56 years. John was the Provincial Apiarist for British Columbia for 32 years and took an early retirement in 1983. John became a world known expert in his field winning the `Apimondia 1999 Award of Excellence` for Outstanding Contributions to Canadian Beekeeping Development. John was very passionate about sharing his expertise and helping others in developing countries. He later worked for CIDA, CARE, and CESO; in Kenya, Uganda, Nicaragua, Peru and Bangladesh. He authored and co-authored many scientific and practical papers on a variety of beekeeping subjects.

As an amateur archaeologist John tirelessly spent many hours cleaning, sketching, measuring, and photographing pictograph sites. His hours of work resulted in a book titled, `Pictographs of the Interior of British Columbia`.

John joined the Canadian Army in 1940 and served in the North Pacific, United Kingdom and the North-western Theatre of war including Germany. He is the holder of an `Order of British Empire` medal for gallantry. John was a member of The BC Dragoons and eventually retired as a major.

John was a member of the Vernon Rotary Club, Vernon Royal Canadian Legion, Charter member of Canadian Association of Professional Apiculturists, member of the BC and Canadian Institute of Agrologists, British Columbia Entomological Society, Canadian Honey Council, British Columbia Honey Producers Association and a charter member of the Canadian Rock Art Research Association.

The family would like to thank the staff at Noric House for the excellent care that they provided to John for the last 6 years of his life. A Celebration of Life will be held at Pleasant Valley Funeral Home on Monday, March 15, at 2:00 pm with Mr. Brian Jackson officiating.
