In Loving Memory of John Horochuk
It is with great sadness and love that we regret to announce the passing of John Horochuk, on Thursday, June 8th, 2006 at the age of 83, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
John was born in Smydon Poland in 1922 and immigrated to Canada with his family at the age of 7. John married Ann (nee Harbarenko) in 1947 and settled on a farm where they lived for 35 years. His career also included 33 years as a School Bus Driver and Swan River Town Councilor before relocating to Vernon, BC in 1982 to enjoy his retirement years.
John was a compassionate and devoted family man who touched everyone’s life in a special way. Loved by all who met him, he was well known as “Popsi”. Always with a kind and positive word, Popsi found time to share a moment with everyone. He particularly enjoyed ‘coaching’ the Vernon Lotus Gardens hockey boyz.
He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, carpentry, and ATV-ing with his sons. His sensitive demeanor was displayed in his love for music, singing,
playing the violin and accordion, reciting poetry and journaling. As a devote member of the Church, John’s deep faith kept him strong throughout his life.
John was predeceased by Anne, his friend and loving wife of 42 years in 1992. He will be dearly remembered by his wife Nancy to whom he was married for 13 years. Also left to treasure his memory are his four children and their families: Ray (Sandi), Pam and Kristy Horochuk, Dan (Liz), Justin and Lindsay Horochuk, Cynthia (Michael) Griffin, Joanne (Lionel), Parker and Carson Gray. He will be sadly missed by his seven siblings Bill, Adam, Peter, Eva, Sophie, Pauline and Bruce.
The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to the Vernon Hospice Society for the wonderful loving care they provided Popsi during his final three week journey. We also would like to thank the amazing doctors, nurses and social workers at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Cancer Center for their compassion and caring. As well, our heartfelt thanks to the coordinators and nurses of the Palliative Care Team.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Pleasant Valley Funeral Home (4303 Pleasant Valley Road) Friday, June 16th at 2:00 pm with Pastor Andrew Picklyk of Kamloops officiating. A reception will follow in the adjoining Tea Room. A farewell visitation will take place Thursday, June 15th at 7:00 pm at Pleasant Valley Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make memorial contributions in Memory of John may do so by making a donation to: Vernon & District Hospice Society, 3506 – 27th Avenue, Vernon, B.C. V1T 1S4. Condolences may be emailed to the family at firstname.lastname@example.org.
