John Irvine Hassard


A former resident of Spallumcheen and Armstrong, John Irvine Hassard passed away peacefully on February 4, 2004 at Hawthorn Park in Kelowna at 95 years of age. Born in Enderby May 16, 1908, John lived on the family farm and went to school in Enderby. Upon graduating from Normal School in Vancouver, he taught at Armstrong Elementary School from 1929 to 1954 and was principal there for 10 years. He then moved to Vancouver to become principal of University Hill Elementary School until his retirement in 1970. John was the last survivor of 18 children and has numerous relatives still living in the Okanagan. John is survived by his wife Anne (nee Mearns) of Kelowna, sons William (Ann) of North Vancouver and Frank (Jean) of Armstrong, and grandchildren Jennifer of Montreal, Stephen (Amanda) of Vancouver, Kathleen and Melissa of Armstrong. A service to celebrate John‚s life will be held at Zion United Church in Armstrong, Saturday February 14, 2004 at 2:00pm. Reception to follow. Cremation, with internment in the Enderby Cemetery later in the spring. No flowers by request.
