In loving memory ~
Surrounded by family, Jack passed away peacefully on June 12/2022 at the age of 88 in Vernon B.C.
He was predeceased by his brothers Fred, Don, Jim and Doug. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Maria (Marlies), sons John Robert (Tamara), Bruce (Deborah) and Charles (Akie). He will also be greatly missed by his nine grandchildren: Alex, Jack, Derek, Victoria, Jonathan, Brayden, David, James and Michelle along with three great grandchildren Kip, Trig and Remi.
Jack was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and at the young age of 17 joined the RCAF. As a Flight Engineer, his position required him to travel all over the world including the Arctic, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia. He always had a wealth of stories from that period of his life.
While stationed in Germany he met the love of his life Maria, and in 1960 when back in Canada they married in Toronto. They raised three children while being transferred between Ontario and Germany before finally settling in Edmonton for several years. Although Jack loved the Air Force and attained the rank of Master Warrant Officer, he decided to retire and move to the sunny Okanagan instead of being transferred to the Yukon, good choice.
Jack worked at the Vernon Lodge Hotel as a maintenance man until retiring and then spent some time at the Vernon Military Camp for a couple of summers. He loved Kalamalka beach and laying in the sun every chance he could. Jack walked a lot due to being diabetic, everyone in the neighbourhood knew him as we think he did more talking than walking. Jack enjoyed socializing, whether at the Legion, Alexanders, the backyard patio, always one to raise a glass to friends. Once the kids moved out, it was time to travel again, this time as tourists. They enjoyed reconnecting with old friends and the map on their wall showed the extent of their world travels. Jack was grateful for his good fortune and paid it forward by donating to several charities and organizations. Dad said he was thankful for a good life and looked forward to meeting up with all the friends he lost, more stories to tell.
The family would also like to thank the following for their care and kindness: Dr. Werner Schuch, Staff at Hearthstone Manor, Thompson family and Adam the Barber.
There is no service by request. Donations in memory of Jack can be made to the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements made through Vernon Funeral Home.
