It is with deep sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of John Leroy Gilbert at the age of 70. John passed away peacefully in his home in Ellensburg, WA, on December 25, 2018.
John was born on July 25, 1948, in Whiteville, AR, to Fred and Blanch Gilbert. John was raised in Ellensburg and graduated from Ellensburg High School in 1966. He served in the US military during the Vietnam War where he earned multiple medals for his bravery. John lived in Vernon between 1976-1984 where he worked as both a carpenter and a mechanic. He was particularly fond of rebuilding motorcycles and enjoyed playing the guitar and sharing a good cup of coffee with friends. John had a deep, thoughtful soul, and will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.
John is survived by the mother of his children, Allison Gilbert of Penetanguishene, ON, his children Carrie (Joel) Urquhart of Coldstream, BC, Jessica Gilbert of Chilliwack, BC, and Matthew Gilbert (Penny) of Vancouver, BC, and his grandchildren Jager, Isabella, Lucy, Aden, Aneisha, and Marcus. John is also survived by his siblings Barbara Hamelian of Seattle, WA, Jim Gilbert of Galveston, TX, and Tom Gilbert of Bellevue, WA. John is predeceased by his parents and older sister Jan Gilbert.
While a small private ceremony was held in remembrance of John, a celebration of life event is being planned for a later date.
