It is with profound sadness that we wish to announce the passing John Maurice Herbert Cottrell on Monday, November 16th, 2009 at 69 years of age. John was born on November 28th, 1939 in Vancouver, BC.
John is survived by his devoted wife, Grace Cottrell, his son Michael and his daughters Heather and Yvonne. He also leaves behind his brother, David Cottrell of Vernon, BC and sister Patricia Whipple of Penticton, BC as well as his nieces and nephews.
John and his parents, brother and sister lived in several small communities around the Interior and Fraser Canyon throughout his life. These included Chilliwack, Monte Lake and Cache Creek, the latter of which is where his father owned a small family restaurant called Hungry Herby’s. Eventually John settled in Kamloops where he lived for almost 45 years.
John moved to Blue River at the age of 21 to start a general store called the Lo-Boy Market. He then moved to Kamloops and opened Surplus Sales on Lansdowne Street that later moved to the North Shore and was renamed Surplus Herby’s. His passion for his work helped his business to thrive and he later opened two more stores in Vernon and Williams Lake.
John will be remembered by all that loved him as a generous, kind man who always had time for charitable pursuits and helping those in need. John’s achievements also included being named Entrepreneur of the Month by Kamloops Chamber of Commerce and he was a long-serving member of the Lion’s Club, and a member of the Kamloops and District Fish and Game Club. He was also a former President of the North Shore Business Improvement Association and avid patron of minor sports in the Kamloops area including soccer, hockey and softball.
In memory of John, and the way he lived his life, we ask his friends and family to do something kind for someone else.
A Celebration of Life will be held on November 27, 2009 at 2:30 pm at the Kamloops Town Lodge and Convention Centre located at 1250 Rogers Way.
Should friends desire, donations to the Kamloops Hospice Association, 72 Whiteshield Crescent S, Kamloops, BC V2E 2S9 or the Vernon Jubilee Hospital ICU, 2101 – 32 Street, Vernon, BC V1T 5L2 in memory of John would be appreciated.
