He was predeceased by his wife, Nancy on October 28th, 2003, to whom he was married for 60 years; his parents, Trofim & Ulita Mielnichuk; one brother, Harry Mielnichuk and one son-in-law, Greg Garbutt. John was a kind man and will be remembered for his generous nature. He came to Canada from Polish occupied Ukraine at the age of seven and his parents homesteaded in the area west of Seba Beach, Alberta. In 1937 the homestead was moved to Highvale, Alberta. John spent many years clearing land, and with dedication and hard work, created a farm for himself and his family. He would farm in the summer and be employed as a sawyer for various companies in Alberta and B.C. during the winter. Due to health reasons the farm was sold and John, Nancy and three of their children moved to Vernon where John worked in a sawmill and then got into building homes. He retired from building and just concentrated on caring for his home and garden. Ten years ago he moved to a condo in Kelowna, where he spent the remaining years of his life. John was a loving, dedicated husband and father and will be remembered for his honesty, his welcoming nature and tender heart. He had a deep faith in God which sustained him through his life.
