John Charles Nickoli
John Charles Nickoli passed away on May 16, 2006 after a short, but courageous, battle with cancer, with family at his side. John was born in Minitonas, Manitoba, August 22, 1928. His early years were spent hunting, trapping and farming in the Red River Valley.
John moved to Vernon, B.C. with his family in February 1947 to the farm in the Coldstream Valley where he spent the remainder of his years.
John met Anna Schneider in the early spring of 1947, and they were wed in December of 1947.
He was one of the founding members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade #597 in Vernon. He was knighted as a Knight in the Order of St. John of Jerusalem in 1996.
Throughout his lifetime he was a farmer, orchardist, logger, sawmill labourer, first aid attendant, as well as a warehouseman with Hiram Walker Distillery for twenty-one years. John retired in 1992.
His last 15 years he remained an active member of the Vintage Car Club of Canada – North Okanagan Chapter.
John is survived by his wife, Anna, of 58 years, sons and daughters, Gordon, Sue McGuigan, David (Mirjam), Nancy and Peter (Shaun), 14 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. John is also survived by siblings Joe, Ruby McRae, Rose Shingler, and Eric.
John was pre-deceased by his daughter, Carol (1981), his mother, Erna (1980), his father, John Elias (1962), his brother, Jerry (1990), sister, Jean (1988), and daughter-in-law, Marina (1995).
Viewing will take place Monday between 6 and 9 p.m. at the Pleasant Valley Funeral Chapel. Funeral service will be held at the Pleasant Valley Funeral Chapel, Tuesday, May 23, 1 p.m.
