John Alexander McRae Pliszka

May 22nd, 1952- January 1st, 2015

On January 1st, after a fast and furious fight with cancer, John passed peacefully in his home, surrounded by his family.

John was born in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba to Nicholas and Vivian Pliszka. He was the second of three children, including his brother Bill and sister Marie. John left home at the age of 19 to join the RCMP. After he left depot, through the early years of his career he was stationed at various locations on Vancouver Island. While stationed in Sooke in 1974, John met Susan Jones, whom he married in 1978. John and Susan moved to Duncan where they started their family, welcoming Meghan and Kyle. After moving north to Burns Lake, John was then transferred to Vernon in 1989 where he finished out his 32 year career with the RCMP. John then worked until the time of his illness doing security at Silver Star Mountain.

Aside from his family, the greatest loves in John’s life were being outdoors and playing sports. John played many sports through his youth but hockey was his lifelong passion. The Vernon Moonshiners and the RCMP hockey team kept John active and young through the winter months, followed by several days each week at Spallumcheen Golf course in the spring and summer. John was known for his honesty and belief in fair play. He was a coach to many throughout the years with minor hockey and baseball. He took great pride in being a positive influence on the youth of our community through his career and coaching efforts.

John is survived by his wife Susan, children Meghan Smith (Jed) and Kyle Pliszka(Kirsten) and grandchildren Kyla, Nicholas, Jackson and Mason. John will be remembered by his family as a loving and involved husband, father and grandfather.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you please feel free to donate to Vernon Kidsport in John’s honor. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. Hardy, Dr. Poulin and all of the doctors and nurses involved in John’s care.

A celebration of John’s life will be held on Saturday January 10th at Vernon Golf and Country Club at 1pm. Please feel free to bring a story to share.
