In loving memory ~
John Reginald "Reg" Shumay passed away peacefully on April 6, 2025, in Vernon, British Columbia, at the age of 83 years.
Born on October 27, 1941, in Vernon, Reg grew up surrounded by the beauty of the Okanagan Valley. In his early years, he worked at Safeway before embarking on a long and dedicated career with Monahan Agencies in Vernon. His professional life was marked by commitment and a strong work ethic that earned him the respect of colleagues and clients alike. After retirement, he spent a wonderful 10 years living in Nakusp, BC.
In high school, Reg played drums in his band the Orbits, showcasing his musical talent and lively spirit. Reg had a deep love for sports and music that followed him throughout his life. He spent many years playing and coaching slo-pitch, sharing his passion for the game with teammates and friends. He also enjoyed golf, horseshoes and bocci—pastimes that brought him joy and camaraderie. He liked going to car shows to see the antique cars, especially convertibles, and loved his own red Ford Mustang convertible.
Known for his quick wit and infectious smile, Reg was always ready with a joke and often found at the center of laughter-filled gatherings. He was truly the life of the party—a good friend to many and a loving father whose warmth touched countless lives. He had a special way with people. Once you had Reg as a friend, you had him as a friend forever.
Reg is lovingly remembered and will be greatly missed by his son Jason and daughter Carrie (Scott); granddaughters Madison and Nicola; and his partner Doreen Johnston. He also held a special place in the lives of Doreen's children—Derek, Lee-Anne (Gord), Tracy (Kim)—and their families; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents John and Katherine (Kay), sister Darlene, and brothers Sonny and Bob.
At his request, there will be no memorial service, but a donation to the BC Cancer Society or Hospice House can be made in his memory.
May his memory bring comfort to all those who knew him.
