Shawchuk, John William
Passed away peacefully on Monday, August 23rd, 2010 at Vernon Jubilee Hospital at the age of 92 years. John was born in Honeymoon, Saskatchewan on October 16th, 1917 and moved to Vernon in 1971.
John will be lovingly remembered by his wife Rose of 69 years, his daughter Pat Wilkes of Vernon, two sons Terry (Betty) of Calgary and Edward (Sandra) of Vancouver as well as one brother Peter of Saskatoon, his grandchildren Penny, Mike (Clair), Carrie, Kelly, Adam and Matthew, as well as his great- granddaughters Michaela, Kristen and Jersey. He was predeceased by his parents John and Anne, his infant daughter Joan and his two brothers Harry and Mike.
John lived for many years in Saskatoon after serving his country in the military. He worked all of his life with the Church, Knights of Columbus and school organizations. Upon moving to Vernon, John and his wife Rose became owner/operators of a fabric shop and Bernina Sewing Centre. They also operated a Ukrainian Gift and Import Centre in downtown Vernon for many years.
John loved watching the Blue Jays and was an avid baseball fan. He was extremely proud of all of his children and grandchildren and was an inspiration to them all. He was a great gardener and raised roses which were his favorite flower. John enjoyed playing cards and socializing with family and friends.
Prayers will be recited at 7:00 pm, Wednesday, August 25th, 2010 at St. Josaphat’s Ukrainian Catholic Church at 2210 – 40th Ave, Vernon BC. Funeral Service will take place on Thursday, August 26th, 2010, at 10:00 am also at St Josaphat’s. The service will be celebrated by Most Rev. Ken Nowakowski, Bishop (Eparch) of New Westminster, and other Ukrainian Catholic clergy. Interment will follow the Funeral at St Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery.
