We regret to announce the passing on February 7, 2008 of Joseph Urban DeLeenheer, born in Chase, on March 4th 1914 to Phil and Anna. Joseph was a middle child in a family of seven and was predeceased by older sisters Lily (Allen) and Yvonne (Hysop) and older brothers Emil and Hubert and younger brother Wilfred. Surviving brother Phil is in Alberta.
Joe’s early schooling was in a one room school-house at Martin Prairie (Prichard) near the family ranch. His high school years were spent on his uncle Buysse’s dairy farm in the Armstrong area. It was here during this period he met Dorothy Howard who was to become his life long partner of some 70 years. Dorothy passed away on May 6th 2007.
Joe leaves behind 4 children, Gary (Romaine), Dudley (Connie), David (Linda), Linda (Jim Fik), 12 grandchildren Valerie (Dave), Greg (Irene), Angie (Trevor), Holly, Jamie, Joel, Seija (August), Damen (Roma), Joshua (Robyn), Brenna (Chris), Dustin and Wade, 9 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.
Dorothy and Joe settled in Vernon in 1938 and he began a long association with the meat business, interrupted by a 41/2 year tour of duty with the Canadian Armed Forces.
Joe is best remembered by his years with the family business of Empire Meats, a retail shop and small packing plant at the north end of Vernon. The family name still remains on the street at that location. His love of the outdoors led him to many conservation efforts with the Vernon Fish and Game Club from which he was honored with a life-membership. Hunting was special to Joe, but fly-fishing was his passion, which he fully enjoyed in his retirement years along with his gardening and wine-making. The family would like to thank the staff of Coldstream Meadows for their care and comfort of Joe and Dorothy and most recently the special care given by the staff at Heron Grove.
In lieu of flowers please direct any donations to Good Samaritan Canada, Heron Grove, 4900-20th Street, Vernon, B.C., V1T 9W3
