June 30, 2020
Dad died peacefully in hospital on June 30 after a fall early in June. We were privileged to be with him to see him off on his "new adventure". He was in his 99th year.
He is survived by his daughter Shelley (Bob) and his son Don (Pat) as well as his grandchildren Regan, Cormac (Elizabeth), Marek (Zöe), Morgayne (Michael), Laura (Jesse), Shannon (Joe) and his great granddaughters Waverley and Clara. Kathleen, his second wife, predeceased him in 2002.
Dad was a family man, the last of six siblings. He looked forward to hearing from his nieces and nephews around the world right to the end. He especially loved news from and visits with his grandchildren and his great granddaughters.
Dad was a veteran of World War 2. He served with the Royal Canadian Airforce as an airframe mechanic, first posted to 6BR Squadron on Haida Gwaii and then reposted to India and Myanmar (Burma) with the RCAF 436 (Elephant) Transport Squadron under the command of the British 14th Army.
After the war Dad's career as an Agricultural Engineer with the Department of Agriculture took him all over British Columbia. His travels helped him to appreciate this province and its natural beauty. He loved the back country and spent much time hiking through areas of the interior, sometimes for a week or more.
He XC skied and gardened. He played the violin and harmonica and enjoyed listening to all sorts of music. He kept his mind sharp by memorizing poetry. A recital of his latest poem was always a special treat for us. Most of all, he enjoyed a fresh cup of tea and a visit with family or a good friend.
At Dad's request there will be no service. Donations can be made, in his memory, to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25, the Allan Brooks Nature Society, Friends of the Vernon Museum, the North Okanagan Historical Society, the Vernon Community Music School or a charity of your choice.
