Kevin Patrick Campbell died peacefully April 28th, 2022, at Pleasant Valley Manor in Armstrong, BC. He was 83 years old.
Born in Toronto in 1939, Kevin, his wife Shirley, and two children moved from West Vancouver to the North Okanagan in the fall of 1976, purchasing a farm property on Bretts Road in Spallumcheen. Though a professional forester by trade working for Spruce Falls Power and Paper, MacMillan Bloedel, and BC Hydro, he was most proud of his contributions and leadership in community organizations, including Vernon Social Planning Council, Armstrong Spallumcheen Credit Union, and Kindale Development Association. This political and social activism began in 1964 during a two-year posting in Eldoret, Kenya for the Canadian International Development Agency where he taught forestry and agricultural practices alongside Shirley who taught English and history. Other international campaigns included several months in Ankara, Turkey, with Médecins Sans Frontières during the 1991 Gulf War, and Lima, Peru, with the Canadian Executive Service Organization in 1995.
Though he and Shirley travelled extensively throughout Europe, Africa, Asia Pacific, as well as North and South America, the farm in Spallumcheen provided the most joy and peace while tending his Hereford cattle, and later an extensive fruit and vegetable garden and tree farm. An avid sportsman, Kevin played high school hockey and football at Saint Michael's College School in Toronto and the University of Toronto where he achieved his undergraduate degree and MBA. He played Oldtimers hockey in both Revelstoke and Armstrong into his 70s and fondly recollected the friendships and aggressive play found on the ice.
Kevin and Shirley moved into Armstrong during summer 2019. And though his mobility suffered during the COVID lockdown, his self-taught computer skills kept him connected to the latest international developments and closely in touch with his three younger sisters Mary-Lorraine, Jane, and Margie; brothers and sisters-in law Heather and Ruben (Butch), Mark and Angie, and David; as well as daughter Megan, son Conal, and granddaughter Elona. He will be remembered as a community advocate, adventurous husband, and principled father. A private internment was held in Armstrong Spallumcheen Cemetery.
