Klaus Lorenz Kuemmerle passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 4, 2018 in Vernon, BC. He was born in Germany and grew up on a small dairy farm in Lechbruck, Ostallgau near the Bavarian Alps. Klaus often recalled fond memories of his childhood hiking and skiing the pristine alpine mountains of his homeland.
In 1974, he followed his dream of immigrating to Canada, arriving in Tappen, BC, working as a dairy herdsman and farmhand. During this time, he completed Grades 11 and 12 at Salmon Arm Senior Secondary and then moved to Vernon to begin college. His initial dream was to pursue a career in veterinary medicine, fitting for his love of farming and country life. Klaus' family had by now arrived from Germany and together made the decision to start a wholesale sausage manufacturing company.
In 1977, Klaus embarked on what became the ultimate passion in his working life. Over the next 40 years, he continued the trade of sausage-making by creating a family-based business, approaching his work with dedication, pride, and attention to detail. Klaus loved his little farm in the BX and treasured his time spent skiing on Silver Star with family and friends, places which reminded him of his early years in Germany. He was a busy man in life and adored his family.
Left to remember his love is his wife Cathryn; daughters Nicole (Brad) and Jeannine (Kristian), and grandson Grayson. He is also survived by his father-in-law Gerry "Grandpa" Nahm, with whom Klaus shared a special bond, and his brother Walter, as well as relatives in Germany and BC.
Over the span of many years, there have been numerous friends and neighbours who have lent a helping hand, and Klaus always appreciated their time and gestures. In fulfilling Klaus' wishes, a private memorial service will be held to celebrate his life. In memory of Klaus, his family encourages those who knew him to take the opportunity to connect with a friend and a neighbour through an act of kindness.
