“Real courage is maintaining optimism in the face of despair.”
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Kurt Benjamin Yakelashek at Vernon Hospice House on May 10, 2010 with his family by his side.
Kurt was born on August 25, 1963 in Swan River, MB. From a young age, he was a highly skilled athlete and excelled in many sports he played, especially volleyball. He loved a variety of music and played drums in his high school bands. He was also an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hiking, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, snowboarding and wakeboarding. Kurt had many fond memories of his annual hunting trip with his father and Uncle Garry. More recently, Kurt raced the #11 car in the Sportsman category at Sun Valley Speedway.
Since 1989, Kurt taught Physical Education at WL Seaton Secondary School and dedicated countless hours coaching many different sports including volleyball, basketball, football and track and field.
Kurt is survived by his parents Ben and Gail, his sister Laurie (Kelly and Fallon), his paternal grandmother Olga, several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
No funeral by request. A gathering of family and friends will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember Kurt are encouraged to make a donation to Vernon’s Hospice House or the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation.
Fly free and high in the wind, Kurt.
We will miss you and will never forget you.
