LAURANCE THEODORE JORDAN

LAURANCE THEODORE JORDAN

Finding a Vernon family untouched by Dr. Jordan is difficult. As the city’s first ObGyn, Ted had his finger on the pulse of the community for over fifty years of active practice.

Laurance Theodore Jordan was born on March 10, 1928 and reared in China by missionary parents. He and his three siblings enjoyed an idyllic childhood until the outbreak of WWII when they were interned at Lungwha Shanghai prison camp. At war’s end, the Jordan family was rescued by a Red Cross ship and set down on North American soil.

Ted began pre-Med at UBC and graduated MDCM from McGill in 1952. After Montreal, he interned at Vancouver General Hospital, completing his surgical residency at Baptist Memorial Hospital, San Antonio Texas in 1957. Torn between pathology and obstetrics, Ted settled on the latter, finishing his ObGyn specialist training at the Mayo Clinic in 1960. Now married with two sons and living in Vernon, he carried a full general practice, acted as department head, as Chief of Surgery and was on-call all day/every day. The Beatles debuted on Ed Sullivan during a house call. Man touched down on the moon; Ted watched while delivering a baby boy in the OR. Medicine was his life. Ted presented a cheerful disposition, an unfailing sense-of-humour and the highest principles of humility, humanity, and kindness. Conferred as an Honorary Member of the BC College of Physicians and Surgeons, he embodied compassion and dignity.
