Laurence Courtney Humphreys
Dec. 13, 1935 – April 23, 2014
Laurence passed away peacefully on April 23, 2014 after a lengthy illness. In 1951, when Laurence was 16, he travelled by rail from a small town in Saskatchewan to Vancouver settling in the Newton area of Surrey. Here he felt so fortunate as he now had, for the first time, indoor plumbing!
Little did he know that he would end up working the next 36 years with Canadian National Railway. He started as a car checker at the Port Mann Yard and worked his way up to hold various clerical positions moving into several supervisory positions. In 1983 he accepted the position of Carload Manager, of Thornton Yard. In 1991 Laurence took an early retirement from CN to pursue other interests. He moved to Armstrong, B.C. where he began another career as a hobby farmer raising Miniature Horses. Then when he moved to Vernon, he continued sharing this love of Miniatures with Bruce & Joan Cunningham of Vista Valley Acres.
He is survived by his wife, Jo-Ann Johnston; daughter Laurie; 2 sisters Margaret & Shirley; 1 brother Wayne; 4 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
To many of his friends and co-workers he was known by the nickname “Gramps” given to him at an early age for being prematurely grey. He always loved to hear or tell a good story involving the railway and will be missed by all who had the good fortune to know him. No funeral by request.
