Lena (Klug, Hessler) Eversfield
May 22, 1917 – March 12, 2014
It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother on March 12, 2014.
Lena was born in Tarvis, Alberta in 1917 to German immigrant farmers, the third of seven children. Mom learned the value of hard work growing up on the family farm. She didn’t have much formal education but learned practical nursing on the job; something that she was always very proud of her whole life. She always cared for people; whenever she could help someone, she did. Mom worked full time yet found the energy to raise 3 children and volunteer at church and in the community. Mom’s Christian education and faith were always strong and very important in her life.
Mom led a very active life with interests in playing cards, bowling, pottery, crafts, and ceramics – winning awards for some of her work but her true passion was dancing. From the barn dances of her youth to the square dancing, round dancing, pattern dancing, and line dancing in her later life. With her square dancing clubs she traveled and danced on cruises to Alaska, the Caribbean, Hawaii, and through the Panama Canal. However, the highlight of every year was the Penticton Jamboree where she and thousands of dancers gathered and danced for a week.
Lena married David Hessler in 1939 until his death in 1989. She married again to Jim Eversfield in 1995 until his death in 2006.
Lena had a wonderful sense of humour, a glorious smile, and always loved a good party.
Lena is survived by one son: Walter Hessler (Shelley) of Comox, BC; two daughters: Patricia Ratcliffe (Linda Grey) of Armstrong, BC, Marie MacDonald (Colin) of Dodsland, SK; grandchildren: Andrew Hessler (Lacy) of Comox, BC, Sandy Ratcliffe of Vernon, BC, Douglas Ratcliffe (Melissa) of Hamilton, ON, Cleveland Fennell (Chris) of Vernon, BC, Tammy Sanders (Jeff Lapierre) of Langley, BC, Kristen Golke of Aldergrove, BC, Jeana Buhler (Cory) of Kelowna, BC; and great grandchildren: Gage. Aslyn and Hailey Hessler all of Comox, BC, Dallas Abbott and Courtney Niebergall of Langley, BC, and Ethan Buhler of Kelowna, BC.
We wish to say a special thanks to all the wonderful caring staff and volunteers at Hillside Village in Salmon Arm where mom was very happy and to the friends she made there. Also, we wish to thank Doctor Rose who was so kind and caring.
A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 21, 2014 at St. John’s Lutheran Church (5151 Alain Road, Vernon, BC) with a burial to follow at Armstrong Spallumcheen Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family at www.MyAlternatives.ca
