Leslie "Les" William Salo, born on May 11, 1952, passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife, children and close family and friends at Vernon Jubilee Hospital on Tuesday, February 1, 2022.
Les was born in North Vancouver, BC, where he grew up playing hockey at the North Shore Winter Club. His passion and skill for hockey took him many places and ultimately led him to Vernon, BC, where he played for the storied Vernon Essos and won the BCJHL's Mowat Cup in the 1971/72 season. He and Vernon Esso's teammates were inducted into the BC Hockey Hall of Fame in 2014.
After his hockey career, Les volunteered as a fireman and eventually had a long and successful career as a trades contractor in the Vernon area.
Les's fondest memories were spending time outdoors camping and fishing with his wife, kids, close family and friends. He also enjoyed coaching and cheering on his children in their various sporting, educational and career pursuits.
Another passion was continually working on his unique home on Kal Lake, buying new tools and building custom reclaimed wood furniture.
Les is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Renee (nee Bliss) Salo and his children, Karli (Robb) Stewart of Edmonton, AB, Cody (Aislinn) Salo of Moosomin, SK and Tyson (Lyndsay) Salo of Salmon Arm, BC.
He was a doting "Papa" to Isla (8) and Finn (6) Stewart with a third grandchild due to Tyson and Lyndsay in June 2022.
Les was predeceased by his parents Robert (Bob) and Winnifred (nee Metcalf) Salo of North Vancouver, BC.
He is also survived by his brother, Rob (Elaine) Salo of Maple Ridge, BC, and his close friends and family members who recently spent time with him in hospital. This support has been invaluable during this difficult time.
A Celebration of Life will be planned for summer 2022, with details to come at a later date.
