In loving memory ~
It is with great sadness that the family pass on the news that Lillian Doris Smith (nee Sokol) passed away on November 19th after a brief stay in the hospital and 3 years of a longer-term illness. The family would like to pass on our heartfelt thanks to the team at the Cancer Clinic at VJH for their care; they never gave up on Mom.
Lillian was born and lived almost all of her life in Vernon and was an active part of the Vernon community as well as the local Ukrainian community. She will be remembered by many as a teacher at VSS and for her involvement in a number of local charities including People Place. Lillian was an active supporter of local performing arts and held season tickets for Powerhouse Theatre and Community Concert for many years. She loved getting out and about and chatting with those that she knew but also new people that she met along the way.
Lillian is survived by her husband of 57 years, Michael, her children Leilani (Pete) and Kursten along with her brothers Andrew (Jeanette) and William (Marlene) and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Anton and Maria Sokol.
Lillian will be fondly remembered by many friends including her group of girlfriends some of which had known each other for 80 years and still regularly got together even if only by Zoom. We will all miss her.
Mom asked that there be no formal service when she passed. For those that wish to join, there will be a gathering with tea and cakes from 11:00 -12:00 on Tuesday Dec 3rd at Bethel Funeral Home before a very simple burial service at Vernon Cemetery at 12:30.
The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, anyone who wishes can send donations to Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation in Lillian's memory.
