Lorraine Phillips (nee Holweg)

After a long and full life, surrounded by her family, Lorraine has gone to her eternal rest at 91 years of age at The Gateby on November 12, 2013.

Lorraine Dorothy May Holweg was born in Kathryn, Alberta, April 28, 1922. At three months of age she came with her parents August and Mathilda and five siblings: Evelyn, Arnold, Leonard, Mildred and Edward, to the land of milk and honey – the sunny Okanagan Valley at Vernon. She led a charmed life in her childhood with her many friends and family. She opened her own hairdressing salon -The Charm Beauty Salon where she enjoyed meeting new people. She was an avid fly fisher who tied her own flies! In her early twenties she joined a friend and circled the globe working on the good ship “Castleville” for a few years – a splendid opportunity to see the world. She then took a business course and became the secretary of Vernon United Church for some sixteen years. Lorraine caught the eye of Duff Phillips on the men’s side of the choir across the chancel. They were married on September 3, 1966. In the following years a son Blair and daughter Shaun joined the family. Many wonderful holidays, trips, camping and family get togethers were enjoyed over the years creating lasting memories. Lorraine enjoyed curling, golf, dancing and especially loved music.

Lorraine is survived by her devoted and loving husband Duff of 47 years, daughter Shaun and her husband Peter Nickoli; three beautiful grandchildren: Peter, Jared and Shirelle; brother-in-law Stewart Phillips, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Beverley and John Clare and many beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Predeceased by son Blair in 1990 and all her siblings.

The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at The Gateby – our extended family – and Dr. Michael Murphy for the many years of caring service. A celebration of life will be held at 2:00pm Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at Trinity United Church in Vernon (3300 Alexis Park Drive Vernon, BC). Lorraine had a soft spot for our four legged friends. Those wishing to do so may make a memorial donation to the Vernon SPCA (4800 Haney Road Vernon, BC V1H 1P6) or a charity of choice.
