Caterer, Margaret: nee Milldrum – died Sunday, April 8, 2007 at The Gateby, Vernon, BC. Born on February 24, 1908 in Raven, Nebraska, USA. Margaret came to Blueberry Mtn., Alberta, Canada in 1918 with her parents and brother. They farmed and also started the post office in the area. Her father was made Postmaster in 1924 and Margaret Assistant Postmaster. To begin with the Post Office was in the Milldrum home, but several years later a separate building was built.
Jesse Caterer arrived in the district in 1922 and took up a homestead. Jesse and Margaret were married in 1928. Their home was a welcoming place for the many friends and visitors. Their farm was chosen in 1954 by the Beaverlodge Experimental Station as an illustration farm where different fertilizers were applied, new varieties of grains and grasses were grown to see if they were suitable to be grown in the area. They also recorded the weather for 18 years with meticulous records. During the 10 years they worked with the Beaverlodge Experimental station they held a field day each year where many people came for an educational and entertaining day. Their yard was beautiful, the showplace of Blueberry for years. They retired to Vernon, BC in 1975. Margaret was predeceased by her husband in January 1983. She sold their home in 1994 and moved to Klamath Falls, Oregon to be near her niece and family. She returned to Vernon in 1999 and has resided at The Gateby since 2000.
