Margaret Stampe

(1922 – 2008)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Margaret Elva Stampe (nee Raynor) at Vernon’s Hospice House on January 7, 2008 at the age of 85 years.

Margaret was a dignified, gentle, and compassionate lady who will always be remembered by her family and her many friends for her generous, caring nature and her illuminating smile. She had a wonderful and fulfilling life as a mother, career woman, sports woman, and lady full of grace. Born and raised in Toronto, she resided in several locations across Canada over the next thirty-five years with her children and her husband Clifford (an RCAF officer). In 1978, “Marg” and “Cliff” retired to their dream log home in 108 Mile Ranch in BC’s Caribou country, remaining there until 1986 when Clifford’s health required them to return to Calgary. Margaret remained in Calgary after Clifford’s death in 1989, living with her sister and best-friend Ruth until 1995 when she relocated to Vernon. An avid walker, bowler, and sometimes golfer, she loved her life in Vernon until 2006 when she was badly injured in a car-pedestrian accident that changed her life dramatically, severely restricting her mental and physical abilities. Throughout the last twenty months of her life however, irregardless of her injuries and her failing health, her warm smile, and engaging personality continued to charm everyone she met. This continued right to the end.

She will be forever missed by her children: Bob (Cathy) Stampe of Vernon BC, Sharon (Ray) Parker of Kamloops BC, Merry (Brian) Shillington of Kelowna BC, Georgina (John) Reed of Bellingham Washington, Paulette (Doug) Crowe of Vernon BC, Bill (Dianna) Stampe of Saskatoon Saskatchewan, and (Hope Stampe) of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; her grandchildren Anita (Jim) Daher, Heather (Brian) Gobbett, Merry (Lyle) Franz, Stan (Lynay) Parker, Hannah (Randy) Hamm, Wesley (Sarah) Parker, Reid Shillington, Scott Shillington, Adam (Kristal) Reed, Helen Reed (Mikie Farber), Jesse (Jennifer) Crowe, Brett Crowe, Nicole Stampe, Derek Stampe, and her great grandchildren; Erin, and Sara Daher, Matthew, Rielle, and Luke Gobbett, Thaniel Franz, Christopher, Thomas, and Elleanna Parker, Brendan, and Miranda Hamm, and Isabella and Analeigh Parker.

We would like to express our gratitude to the nurses, care-aides and volunteers at the Vernon Hospice House for their loving care and attention to Mom during her final days while in residence there, and to the staff at Coldstream Meadows Senior’s Residence for their care and support during her 18 month stay there. Special thanks to Debbie Philips from Interior Health, who helped Mom so much in her transition to Hospice, and to Dr. David Arnold, Mom’s trusted physician for many years.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at Pleasant Valley Funeral Home in Vernon on January 12 at 2:00 PM. Flowers are gratefully declined. In lieu of flowers, we would encourage donations in memory of Margaret to the Vernon Hospice House.
