It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of MARIE SOPOTIUCK at Poison Multilevel Unit in Vernon on Friday, August 12, 2005, twelve days shy of her 95th birthday. Born in what is now the Ukraine on August 23rd, 1910, Marie arrived in Canada in 1921 with her mother to join her father on a homestead in the Piapot-Maple Creek area of Saskatchewan. In 1936 she married Pete Chermishnok and had three children, one of whom died as an infant. After Pete’s passing in 1946, Marie married Steve Sopotiuck in 1052, joining her families, and moved to Lac Du Bonnet, Man. Following Steve’s retirement from the CPR, they moved to Vernon in 1962, where they enjoyed gardening, particularly tending fruit trees and cultivating roses. Marie loved to travel, visiting her extended family and friends from coasts to coast. She also visited relatives in the old country on three occasions. She now joins in peace her husband and two stepsons, Joe (Doreen) of Victoria, and Bill (Pearl) of Thunder Bay. She is survived by her daughter Judy (Frank) Leanard of Burnaby; her son Joe (Arlene) Chermishnok of Red Deer; two stepdaughters , Betty (Alf) Quinn of Keewatin, Ont., and Anne Olmstead of Carberry, Man; two stepsons, Pete Sopotiuck of Sooke, B.C., and John Sopotiuck of Lac Du Bonnet; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; a sister Anne (Donal) of Calgary; two brothers Steve (Violet) Krusczko and Bill Kruczko, both of Maple Creek; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
