In loving memory ~
We are sad to announce that Marilyn (Cindy) Kidston died peacefully in her home on 25th November 2022, with family by her side.
Cindy was born and raised in Vernon, later moving to Vancouver, where she married her high school sweetheart, Hew, in 1964. In 1969 the young couple realized a dream, spending four months exploring Europe in a VW camper van. Two years later, Hew's transfer to Grande Prairie brought a sudden change of lifestyle, which Cindy embraced with enthusiasm, diving into bridge, painting, choral singing and gardening. Here, Cindy and Hew welcomed two sons and fostered lasting friendships, Cindy finding time and energy to share her love of cooking through many dinner parties.
In 1980, Cindy and her family returned to Greater Vancouver, where they enjoyed the best of two worlds-quiet, semi-rural Maple Ridge, with Vancouver just next door. Again Cindy took advantage, deepening her engagement in bridge and the arts, and actively supporting her sons' school community and their outdoor activities, with her beloved poodle, Rusty, often by her side.
Retirement saw a return to the Okanagan, and an opportunity to build a home on grandfather Kidston's orchard. Cindy found her way to new book clubs, choirs, and added Tai Chi to her weekly pursuits. A stroke in 2012, another in 2018, and advancing dementia brought challenging obstacles, which Cindy tackled with determination and grace. Cindy's family is grateful to close friends and to the many caring individuals at Vernon Community Care who helped us support Cindy at home throughout her final journey.
Cindy is survived by her devoted life-long partner and friend Hew, her wonderful sons Jordan (Jessie) and Hamish (Krista), and by her cherished grandchildren Elizabeth, Andrew, Jaime, Joelle and Grace. We miss her dearly. She was predeceased by her parents Stuart and Mary ("Mollie") Oldham, and by her sister Nancy Oldham.
An informal family memorial gathering was held in her home on 27th November.
Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation.
