Mary Merchant, a long time Coldstream resident, died peacefully at her home on Thursday, August 3, 2006. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Merchant, and by her four brothers. She is survived by her sisters, Nora Clayden of Salmon Arm and Muriel Marett and Eve White of Grays UK. She is also survived by her four children, Peter (Valerie) in Wimborne UK, Vivian (Michelle) of Vernon, Daphne McKenzie (Tom) of the Coldstream, and by Richard (Debra) in Burnaby, by eight grandchildren
on three continents, and by three great grandchildren.
Mary White was born in Ramsbottom, Lancashire UK on September 9th, 1913. As a young adult she moved to Grays Essex where she met and married Joe Merchant. Together they moved to the North Okanagan in 1952, residing briefly in Oyama and Salmon Arm before settling in Vernon. Mary had been employed by E.B. Cousins and by the Health Unit before becoming an award-winning real estate agent. She and Joe were avid travelers, and made trips to Europe, Asia, and Australia. They square danced and had season’s passes at Silver Star Mountain for many years. In later years Mary became an accomplished bridge player and a member of the Baden-Powell Society.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Schubert Center at 2pm on Saturday, August 19th, lead by Pastor Dan Head of the Faith Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Joe and Mary Merchant Scholarship Endowment Fund at Simon Fraser University.
