Mary Sherwood

Mary died on December 6th, 2005 in her 94th year. She had lived courageously with Parkinsons Disease for 20 years. The date on which she died coincided with the wedding anniversary of daughter Penny and son-in-law Chris Bayne. Mary grew up in England and pursued a career in nursing. She gained certificates as a Registered Fever Nurse, a State Registered Nurse, graduating at the top of her class. She then trained to become a State Certified Midwife. She practiced as a district nurse midwife in Bidford-on-Avon, Warwickshire from 1942-1957. Mary lost her first husband, Ivor Thomas, in February 1943 in a plane crash over Sicily. She met John Sherwood after WW11 ended and they married in 1949. John and Mary retired to Canada in order to live nearer their grandchildren Alexandra and James, and his wife Tonya, and great-grandson Braden. They enjoyed a very active retirement. Mary sang in various choirs including the Anglican Church Choir, Okanagan Symphony Choir, Scott Singers and of late, the Halina Choir. She was a member of the Powerhouse Theatrical Society, Naturalists Club and the Vernon Lawn Bowling Club. She loved her family, enjoyed all homemaking skills and especially enjoyed her garden, picking, selling and freezing raspberries. Mary’s brother, Peter Bayne and wife Margaret, reside with their son Michael in Ashford, Kent. Her niece, Nicola and husband Bill Nokes and their son Samuel, reside in Waltham Abbey. Other family members also reside in the U.K. A Remembrance Service for Mary will be held on December 19th, 2005, at 4:00 p.m. at All Saints’ Anglican Church, 3205-27th Street, Vernon.
