Mel Garbutt

1933 – 2014

Mel was born in Vernon, B.C. on May 3rd, 1933. He passed away December 16th in Cottage 6 at Heron Grove after a stay at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital. He was predeceased by his parents, Wilfred and Bertha (Manning) Garbutt, two sisters: Gladys Nixon and Audrey Clayton, as well as five brothers: Len, Norm, Bob, Fred and Wally. Mel is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Nichol), one son, Ross, and two daughters; Donna Garbutt and Nancy Zermeno as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Mel graduated from Vernon High School and second year at UBC. He worked for BC Hydro for over twenty years including head office in Vancouver and six years as the business manager at Howard House. In 1976, the family moved to Washington State where Mel worked for Wales & Associates as a manufacturer’s rep for electrical utilities equipment. He enjoyed traveling and choral singing. Two highlights of his choral interests were touring Europe with a Methodist choir and performing onstage at Carnegie Hall (with his wife). He also enjoyed sports, fishing and camping (without his wife!). When he returned to Vernon in 1998, he sang with Aura, Vernon Community Singers and the Trinity United Church Choir. Mel served on several committees in the Trinity and Marysville Methodist Churches. He was Vice-President of Friends of History, President of Vernon Community Singers and Treasurer of Special Olympics for ten years. The family would like to thank Dr. Screen, Dr. Hardy, Hospital staff and the great staff at Cottage 6 at Heron Grove for all the care and kindness over the years. Thank you!
