Mervyn Ward

1934 – 2009

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mervyn Ward on May 9th, 2009 in Vernon, BC. Merv was predeceased by his parents, William and Gladys Ward. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Shirley, and children: Cindy (George) Gaab, Sandi (Warren) Gehring, Carla Peters (Mike Schneider), Michael (Lisa) Ward; grandchildren: Amber and Chelcey Gehring, Nikole (Andrew Alexander) and Chance Peters, Johnee Ward, and great grandson, Jordan Gehring.

Merv was born on September 5th, 1934 in Winnipegosis, MB. As an impressionable teen, he moved to Ninette, MB where he met the love of his life, ‘the little red-head girl across the lane”. Merv attended normal school and became a teacher at the age of seventeen, but after one school year he decided this wasn’t his calling. Soon after, he and Shirley married and started their life and family together in Brandon, MB. Merv started his life-long career as a credit manager in Brandon and this career took him and his family crisscrossing the Prairie provinces in a total of nine moves, ending with his retirement in Vernon, BC. Along the way, Merv made many life-long friends and positively influenced all whom he met. He will be fondly remembered for his deadly wit, dry sense of humour and “Mervisms”. He loved to socialize and break into song as the party drew on.

Merv was a member of the Vernon Golf and Country Club, Parkinson Society of BC and the Vernon & District Family History Society. He loved to draw and paint and shared this passion with his grandchildren.

His family would like to convey a special “thank you” to Dr. R. Long, the nurses on 3W at Vernon Jubilee Hospital and all the staff of the North Okanagan Hospice House. A celebration of Merv’s life will be held on Thursday, May 14th, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Vernon Golf and Country Club, 800 Kalamalka Lake Road, Vernon, BC.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Parkinson Society of BC, 600 – 890 West Pender Street, Vancouver, BC V6C 1J9 or the North Okanagan Hospice Society, 3506-27th Avenue, Vernon, BC V1T 1S4
