Michael Fussell

was born on February 4th, 1917 in Kingswood, England and passed away on September 4th, 2011 in Enderby, B.C. at the age of 94 years. Mike came to Canada in 1939, working first at Timmons, Ontario. He served with the 6th Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers, in France, Germany and Holland. From 1945 until his retirement he worked as a surveyor and engineer on a variety of railway construction jobs throughout Canada, as well as three in Africa. His retirement years allowed Mike to participate in a sport he grew to love – golf! His continuing skill took him to the Masters Summer Games. When he was 91 he fell and broke his hip, having just returned home after golfing with friends. Mike lived in Armstrong and Vernon prior to calling Oakside Manor his home in Enderby where he has lived since 2007. Mike was a gentle man and a gentleman in every situation. He strived for excellence and gave his best in everything he did. He loved to read and his keen mind and brilliant memory allowed him to converse on many subjects with accurate historical detail.

Mike will be lovingly remembered by his sister, Rosemary Blomfield as well as his nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends in Canada and England. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Marguerite Fussell. Phyllis Simon, his Notary Public for 22 years, became his personal assistant and surrogate family member during the years of his declining health. Mike’s family in England, although far away were constantly supportive and involved in Mike’s life through letters, photos, presents, phone calls and emails. Their gifts included a player for audio books and Mike spent many hours listening to biographies of famous people.

In respecting Mike’s wishes, he was cremated and no funeral service will be held.
