MICHAEL LATTEY
1914- 2003
Dr. Michael Lattey died on May 26, 2003 of old age and on his own terms. He was surrounded by the love and support of his four children and their partners: Lisa Duprey of Vancouver, Christine/Tini Lattey (Gerry) of Vancouver, Peter Lattey of Los Angeles, Steven Lattey (Carol) of Los Angeles. He is survived by the mother of his children Hedi Lattey of Vernon, his former wife Della Lattey of Vancouver, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mike’s life was full of service to others, pursuits to satisfy his intellectual curiosity and physical activity. These passions led him to mountains, oceans, lakes, and skies in BC and around the world. He hiked, skied, sailed, built telescopes and boats, and helped found Silver Star Mountain. In his later years he took up the clarinet and proudly participated as the oldest student at the Courtenay School of Music!
In many ways he was a man before his time. Driven by the belief that every person deserved a fair chance, he operated one of the first drug treatment programs in the province, and with Hedi started the first services for seniors and the first center for people with mental disabilities. His daughters had the same opportunities as his sons and his children were offered $100 if they didn’t smoke. Mike was an ardent pacifist, a member of the Physicians for Social Responsibility, and committed to preserving the environmental integrity of our earth. Up to the very end, he continued to explore and push the boundaries of a thinking man in our society.
A wake was held in Lisa’s garden, attended by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and their families. On the August long week-end, his ashes will be scattered at Silver Star, where his spirit will continue to play.
