July 26, 1944 – December 08, 2013
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nadia Hebert on December 08, 2013, after a 2½ year courageous battle with cancer. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 47 years, Claude, her three daughters, Carol (Keith Kirkland), Michelle (Jeff Purkiss) and Jackie (Marc Tomlinson). She was an active and hands on grandma and will be dearly missed by her eight grandchildren: Megan, Kelsey, Matthew, Justin, Michael, Elizabeth, Justin and Catelyn. She is survived by her three sisters, Anne Zuk, Iris (Jim) Bailey, Sandy (Everett) Rowlett, and two brothers, Mike (Mary) Okun and John (Jean) Okun. She is predeceased by her parents, Nicholas (1973) and Anastasia (1983) and two brothers Bill (Pauline) Okun and Morris (Adele) Okun (2013).
Born on a farm near Ethelbert, Manitoba, Nadia graduated from Ethelbert High School in 1962. An excellent student, she received a scholarship to attend Manitoba Teacher’s College and then got her first teaching position in Selkirk, Manitoba in 1963. In 1965, she met the love of her life, Claude, and they married on May 20, 1967. They lived in Winnipeg, where their three daughters were born, until 1977 when Claude was transferred to Grande Prairie, Alberta. She received her Bachelor of Education degree at Grande Prairie Regional College and returned to teaching elementary school in 1980. Nadia was an amazing woman who always put the needs of others first and she was well-loved by the hundreds of students she taught in her 20 year career. Since her retirement in Vernon she enjoyed many hobbies including gardening, curling, and travelling. She was a member of the CWL, and often made trips to their vacation home in Mesa. She will be missed by the strong network of friends she had here in Vernon who supported her during her battle with cancer. She will be remembered for her love and support of family, and for her faith in God. Her motto throughout her illness was to live life fully, “one day at a time”.
Prayers – Friday, December 13 at 7 pm. Funeral Mass – Saturday, December 14 at 11 am. Both at St. James Catholic Church, Vernon. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Nadia’s name may be made to Okanagan Hospice House: www.hospicecoha.org
