NELSON, Nels Arthur “Art”
We are saddened to announce the death of Nels “Art” Nelson on February 5, 2015 at the age of 85 years. Art was born on December 29th, 1929 in Nelson, B.C. He was predeceased by his parents, one brother Earle, his first wife Beth in 1986, and his son Guy in 2009. He is survived by his wife Margaret of 28 years; his daughter Darlene (Ray Laurilla); and three grandchildren: Aaron Kimmie, Ryan Kimmie, Megan and son Levi; and three step children: David Philp, Sharon Isaak and Barbara (Chris) Obonsawin; and two step grandchildren, Andrew and Kathryn Nydam.
Art began his long and distinguished career with the B.C. Provincial Government Agency, Department of Finance. He served in Nelson, Quesnel, Fort St. John, and came to Vernon in 1970 as Government Agent in the Court House. Art retired in 1984 after 35 years of service. Many people have spoken of the professional, honest and thorough character of his work and his dedication to it.
Art was engaged in community service with the Jaycees, the Rotary Club, The United Church, the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Board and the executive at Ironwood Community. He will be remembered as a kind, generous, fun loving man with a large circle of friends. He loved travelling, parties, golfing, gardening, fishing, hunting and curling. Art was an accomplished accordionist and entertained many with his talents. He had a long and happy retirement with his wife, Margaret. They enjoyed travelling and spent many winters in Southern California with their friends.
A Celebration of Art’s Life will be held on Wednesday, February 11th, 2015 at 3:30 p.m. in the chapel of Pleasant Valley Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, those friends wishing to make memorial contributions in memory of Art may do so to Gateby Care Residence, 3000 Gateby Place, Vernon, B. C. V1T 8V8.
