Nigel S. Hughes
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Nigel S. Hughes on August 4, 2007 at Vancouver General Hospital with his family at his side. He leaves behind his deeply devoted and loving wife June, his son Bryan (Michele), his daughter Alana (Dan), and his six grandchildren, Bianca, Koa, Jarod, Bayne, Austin and Carter, as well as his great grandchild Paeton.
Nigel was born in Swords, Ireland on March 10, 1940. He immigrated to Canada with his parents Arthur and Nora Hughes at the age of 12 and attended the Vernon Prep School as well as high school in Ponoka, Alberta, where he met his wife, June. Nigel went on to obtain his teaching degree from the University of Alberta in Edmonton and then furthered his education at the University of Oregon, where he received his Masters and Doctorate in Education. Nigel moved to Oyama in 1971 with his family to continue his career working in the field of education as a Teacher, Counsellor and School Administrator in the Vernon School District.
Nigel was very involved in his community and enjoyed numerous political, social and community endeavours. His opinions and comments could be heard through his newspaper column “View from the North” or on numerous talk radio programs in the province.
Nigel Hughes was our HERO and ends his life the way he lived it, with unfaltering strength and dignity.
