Norman GALLOWAY

GALLOWAY: Norman

It is with great sorrow in our hearts that we announce the passing of Norman Robert Galloway, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend.  Norm is survived by his devoted wife, Lorraine; son Robert (Kathy) and grandchildren Josh and Marcia; and son Gordon (Carol).  He was predeceased by his youngest son, Jim.  Norm will be missed by his cousin, Judy Keckalo, as well as numerous relatives in British Columbia and Alberta.

Norm was born in 1925 in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta and his family moved to Richmond, B.C. when he was five years old.  During World War II, Norm served with the RCAF as a wireless operator.  After the war, he graduated with a BSC in Agriculture from UBC.  In 1950, he married Lorraine Tolley and that year they moved to Vernon where Norm taught school until 1977 at both Vernon Senior Secondary and Clarence Fulton Junior High.  Upon retirement from teaching, Norm worked as a realtor until 1984 when he and Lorraine both retired.  For the next twenty years they spent their winters in Arizona and their summers on Okanagan Lake.

Throughout his years prior to retirement, Norm was actively involved in the community in Vernon, serving in numerous positions. He was with the Boy Scouts for twenty-five years, was involved with the Vernon Teachers’ Association, serving two terms as President,  was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and was the charter President of the Vernon Toastmasters.  In his early years, he was a member of the committee with Bishop Sovereign to bring the first community library to Vernon.  Norm was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Vernon for many years and was an active member of the North Westside Fellowship Church.

A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at 2:00 PM at the Pleasant Valley Funeral Home Chapel.  In lieu of flowers, people wishing to do so may send donations to the Vernon Hospice House.

Norm’s family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Kim and Joanne from Kimberlee Support Services for the exceptional care and compassion they provided to Norm.
