Ohanie Hrycenko


1912 to 2007

Ohanie Hrycenko passed away peacefully on May 12, 2007 in Kamloops, BC at the age of 95. Ohanie was a resident of Vernon from 1922 until 1999. After his second stroke in 1999, he moved to Kamloops to be closer to his family and resided at Overlander Extended Care Hospital until his death. Ohanie will be fondly remembered as the consummate gardener. For over 50 years, he and his wife, Catherine, created beautiful gardens at their home at Swan Lake. In their later years, they moved to Maple Grove Manor in Vernon where Ohanie won several landscaping awards. Even at Overlander, Ohanie supervised the planting and tending of his award winning planter box from his wheelchair.

He is survived by his son Ron (Shane) Haywood of Kamloops; daughter Carol (Garry) Slezak of Calgary; grandchildren Lauren Slezak, Alison (Brent) Miller, John (Heidi) Haywood and 5 great grandchildren: Lauren, Katie, Jillene, Dawson and Jaxson. He was predeceased by his wife Catherine in 2006 and his son Lawrence in 2002.

A gathering of remembrance will be held on Sunday, May 27th at 1 pm at Bethel Funeral Chapel, 5605-27th Street, Vernon, BC V1T 8Z5 (542-1187)
