August 28, 1932 - March 19, 2023
In loving memory ~
Carey, Peg, Margaret (nee Fry) peacefully passed away on March 19th in Coquitlam, B.C. Peg was born in Florence, Cape Breton on August 28th, 1932. She attended school in Florence and Sydney Mines. After completing teacher training in Truro, Peg was employed by the Florence School District until she married Sonny in January 1953. She taught at Millville, Cape Breton until moving to Brandon, MB in January 1955.
In 1956, she was hired by the Brandon School Board, teaching at King George School for five years and one year at Alexander School. In July 1962, Peg and her two children Ron and Vicki moved to London, Ont. to join Sonny who had been posted there in May. Peg enjoyed four wonderful years there - spending many weekends at Fanshaw Lake and Rondeau Park on Lake Erie.
In August 1966 Sonny was posted back to Shilo, MB where the family lived in PMQs on the base until settling in the village of Sprucewoods in 1978. Peg was employed by the Shilo School District in 1967 and remained on the staff until her retirement in 1990. While teaching and raising a family, Peg found time to further her own education. She earned her B.A. and B.Ed. at Brandon University after many hours of night courses, intersession, and summer school courses. Peg was a "born" teacher who truly enjoyed her students and her co-workers. While living in Sprucewoods, Peg spent her leisure time working in the yard, swimming in her pool, walking and biking with her best friend, Peggy Johnston.
Peg and Sonny retired to Vernon, B.C. in the summer of 1990. Those were really Peg's "golden" years. She now had time to "stop and smell the roses" - spending most of her leisure time walking, swimming, shopping and travelling. Always a true Cape Bretoner, Peg returned "down home" almost every summer to spend time with her extended family.
She spent the last four years in the Lower Mainland, living closer to her daughter. Many memories were made of enjoying ice cream, Timbits and going for long drives.
Peg was predeceased by the love of her life, Sonny (2019) her parents, and daughter-in-law Shelley. She is survived by her son Ron, daughter Vicki, granddaughter Susan (Daniel) great-grandsons Riley and Zachary, sisters Jessie (Dirk), Clara (Roddie) and Jean, as well as many relatives in Nova Scotia.
Special thanks to the dedicated staff at Lakeshore Care Centre for their exceptional care, her wonderful companions Kiran and Yasmine, "Magical" Mary, Corrie and other dear friends who supported her in her final years. We are comforted to know that Peg is at peace and reunited with her true love Sonny.
At Peg's request, there will be no memorial service. Information about a small gathering in Port Coquitlam, will be shared at a later date.
