June 2, 1924 - September 28, 2020
Peggy Marshall, our beloved 'GG', passed away suddenly on September 28th, in her 97th year. Fit and feisty to the end, she will be greatly missed by all, but especially her treasured great grandchildren Lucas and Anneke VanderVelde, Jake and Louis Black and Amelia and Niko Frank.
Peggy is survived by her grandchildren Erin (Matt) Black, Lisa (Shawn) VanderVelde and Jordan Marshall, her daughters-in-law Liz (Thomas) Frank and Judy Marshall. She was predeceased by her husband Tom Marshall and her three sons, David, Mickey and Terry Marshall.
Peggy was born June 2, 1924 in Edmonton, Alberta, the fourth of Patrick and Mollie Murphy's eight children. At age 14 she moved to Rochester in northern Alberta to homestead with her family.
At 18, she joined the RCAF during WW2 and was stationed in Ontario, Manitoba and Alberta. Upon discharge in 1945 she returned to northern Alberta where she ran a trapline with her sister Rita.
In 1946 Peggy was visiting her brother Charlie in Vernon when she was offered a job as a nurse's aid at Vernon Jubilee Hospital. Besides her nursing duties, she filled out forms for patients, one of whom was Tom Marshall. That form led to their marriage September 22, 1947.
During the early years of her marriage, Peggy worked with Tom in logging camps. Their son Dave spent his first years there helping mom cook. With the birth of the twins, Mickey and Terry, they settled in Lavington, then Coldstream to raise their family.
Peggy worked at The Hudson's Bay Company for 20 years and belonged to the Lavington Ladies Work Group and the Coldstream Women's Institute. She and Tom were avid dancers and Peggy continued to show off her 'moves' to the residents of Carrington right up to the end.
In retirement. Peggy and Tom loved to fish and travel in their camper around Western Canada and the States. Autumn would find them in Osoyoos harvesting grapes with friends.
Besides a life well-lived, GG will be remembered for her resiliency, indomitable spirit and no-nonsense approach to life. "Well, there's nothing to be done about it except to carry on" was her motto when faced with life challenges and personal loss.
The family would like to thank the staff and residents of Carrington where Peggy enjoyed excellent care, fun times and wonderful friendships. Also, a big thank you to Dr. LePage and his staff for their kind and diligent care over the years.
A family celebration of Peggy's life will take place at a later date.
