Aug 16th, 2013

Peter passed away peacefully at Vernon Jubilee Hospital at the age of 97. He was father of Bill, Marie (Andrew), Tony (Pat), Arthur, Noreen (Ernie), Rosa (Brian), Donna (Ted), Robin (Colleen), Betty, Gerald (Mary), George (Sally). Peter has 35 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and is predeceased by the love of his life Bertha (Carey) in 2001.

Peter was born in Winkler, Manitoba, to a large Mennonite family. The family moved to Winkler and then Osterwick where he completed most of his schooling. He came to B.C. at the age of 18, working a number of jobs from threshing, picking apples, mechanicing, pulling lumber on a green chain, working as a bull cook and fuller brush salesman. Around 1938, Peter and his two brothers, Bill and Jack, started Dyck’s Garage in Lumby. Peter met Bertha at an Easter dance and the two were married in June of 1940 and settled in Lumby. In 1942, Peter joined the Air Force where he became a flying instructor. Bertha, Bill and Marie soon joined him in Vulcan and later Calgary, Alberta. In 1945, Peter returned to Dyck’s garage in Lumby as a mechanic. He always nurtured his love of flying and owned his own plane for many years. He flew fire patrol out of Kelowna for a number of years. In 1950 Peter acquired a truck and started hauling lumber. It was not long before he joined Bill who was logging at the time and Dyck’s Logging became a thriving business in Lumby. After that business sold in 1967, Peter worked for John Deere for fourteen years doing electrical and hydraulics before retiring at age 70. He was always very keen to help anyone with mechanical repairs. Peter taught the air brakes course at the college in Vernon for many years. Peter always loved music and played the ukulele, guitar, organ and piano. He played the organ at church, mowed his own lawn, drove his car, and exercised daily until a month before he passed away. He was a self-taught man, always reading and keeping current on technology, engines and his Catholic faith. He was deeply loved and respected by his family and friends and will leave a huge hole in all our lives with his passing. Prayers for Peter will be held at Sacred Heart Church, Lumby, at 7 p.m. Friday, August 23rd. Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Coldstream at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 24th.
